Handwara, Dec 07 (KNO): A determined young man from Handwara area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district has achieved success in sheep farming despite facing numerous challenges. Nouman Dar, a resident of Herpora Handwara, has succeeded in the field of sheep farming through years of hard work and dedication, without any external support. Speaking with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Nouman said there are numerous benefits associated with sheep farming which he said is interconnected with agriculture, horticulture and floriculture. “There is a great scope in it,” he said. Dar also underscored the importance of preserving the natural environment by caring for animals, including cows and sheep. Nouman spoke about his experience in taking care of various sheep species, saying that after years of learning, he has identified two specific breeds – Kashmir Marino Sheep and Corriedale Sheep. “Both species have shown remarkable growth and have become a reliable source of income,” he shared. He credited his grandfather's legacy in sheep farming, saying it was their family trade in the past. Nouman recounted a pivotal moment in his journey when, after Friday prayers, he encountered a sheep auction. “I borrowed a sheep and it ignited my passion for the field,” he recalled. Detailing the challenges faced initially, Dar said it is important to understand the specific needs of sheep, such as food, temperature and environment. He said that despite the initial lack of interest in sheep farming in their locality, about 50 families are now associated with it. “This is a positive shift,” he remarked. Nouman said his family’s livelihood depends solely on the income generated from sheep farming. Due to sheep farming, we are also associated with agriculture, horticulture and floriculture, which offer a lot of employment opportunities. He encouraged the youth not to limit themselves to government jobs. There are abundant opportunities in sectors like agriculture, floriculture and horticulture, which offer substantial benefits and employment prospects, he said. Nouman also mentioned the challenges faced by those aspiring to avail of government schemes for sheep farming. He urged the Lieutenant Governor of J&K to ease the process and criteria set by the Sheep Husbandry department. “The criteria should be adjusted to accommodate passionate individuals to enable them to pursue a livelihood in sheep farming,” he said—(KNO)
